Tyler Dibling Struggles in First Everton Season After £40m Move from Southampton
Speculation about Tyler Dibling's future at Southampton once included a £100 million price tag, which the young player said turned into a running joke among his teammates. That figure showed how highly the gifted 20-year-old was rated on a Southampton team headed for relegation well before last season ended.
Dibling eventually transferred to Everton for £40 million, one of the club's priciest signings ever, after interest from Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig. He arrived as a hailed generational talent set to anchor Everton's new chapter at Hill Dickinson Stadium under manager David Moyes, now in his second stint.
Former Southampton manager Russell Martin agreed. "When I was there I had to play it down a lot and not make things more difficult for him, but he is the most talented player I've ever worked with," Martin said.
Dibling's first season at Everton has been quiet. He started four Premier League matches and six overall, logging 513 minutes. He sat out when Jack Grealish suffered a season-ending foot injury, despite similar dribbling styles that invited comparisons. Dwight McNeil also stayed ahead of him after Everton's planned sale to Crystal Palace fell through.
Everton and England officials still see a bright future for the introverted Dibling. England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley has made him a regular as the team defends its 2023 European Championship title. Sources say Carsley admires his talent and attitude. In the 2025-26 campaign, Dibling started three Under-21 games, appeared in six and played 261 minutes.
Moyes wants improvement from Dibling, who will not start Monday's home match against Manchester City. "He'll have to do better, I think," Moyes said. "He'll have to do better in his work and in his training. We brought in Tyrique George on loan from Chelsea, who is of a similar age and as competition as well to make sure we were covered. I think Tyrique has done well in the moments he's had in games and shown some bits that we like, so we want Tyler to step up, we really do. He's important to us. He's a player who we put a lot of faith and money into to bring him here so we are looking for a lot more."
Pre-season this summer counts as key for Dibling's growth, when he must show readiness for regular action. Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman, who played under Moyes before, sympathizes. "This year has been an education," Osman told BBC Sport. "I would expect him to come back at the start of next pre-season looking like he's ready to challenge for a first-team place."
Osman noted Dibling's move from home in Southampton to the north, plus the pressure of a big fee in a new club culture. "Everton is a different environment to a lot of other football clubs, so it's not always easy to hit the ground running, but his talent shows that if he knuckles down and works as hard as he can, it will work for him."
Osman described Moyes's patient approach with youth. Dibling shone at Southampton with free-spirited dribbling but must adapt to off-ball demands in Moyes's system. "You have to prove that you can work for the team and you can work off the ball," Osman said. "David is well aware that there is no 'one size fits all' way of going about it."
The signing fits Everton owners The Friedkin Group's plan, blending established players like Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with prospects such as Dibling, Merlin Rohl and Adam Anzou for development and resale value. No doubts linger about Dibling, who recently told TikTok he enjoys northern life. Loan signing George adds wide-area competition, though Dibling knows him from Under-21 duty and Chelsea.
"I would be absolutely amazed if Dibling wasn't at Everton next season and be expected to progress and be part of the team," Osman said. "It's been a season of development, but that £40m price tag amplifies expectations and everything that goes with it."
