Trump Asks BBQ Owner About Patrick Mahomes' Injury Recovery at White House Event

President Donald Trump hosted Joe Pearce, president of Slap's BBQ from Kansas City, at the White House on Monday to highlight the Small Business Summit in Washington. The sports-minded president soon shifted to Patrick Mahomes' condition.

"The most important thing, how's Mahomes doing?" Trump asked Pearce about the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback. "Is he OK?"

"He's OK," Pearce replied without hesitation.

"You tell the people we love him," Trump said.

Trump praised Brittany Mahomes for strongly defending him on social media. The quarterback's mother Randi and wife Brittany support Trump, and brother Jackson once took a selfie with the president. Mahomes has not publicly endorsed Trump.

Trump asked for more details on Mahomes, who is recovering from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. He suffered the injury last December, a major setback for the Chiefs' disappointing 2025 season.

"So, he'll start Game 1, you think?" Trump pressed Pearce.

Joe and his brother Mike, who founded Slap's, are not medical experts. They responded, "We're hopeful."

Chiefs coach Andy Reid provided a positive update over the weekend. "Yeah, I know he’s doing a lot of stuff right now," Reid told reporters. "That’s what I can give you. He is throwing the ball, and he does it on his own so he’s not getting in any trouble here."

The Chiefs start Offseason Team Activities on May 26. Mahomes, five months after surgery, has rehabbed mostly at the team's training facility. He posted an Instagram video of himself taking drops, though not at full speed.

"We’ve got to see on that," Reid said about possible OTA participation. "He is in a good position to be able to do some things. There’s some rules and regulations that go with that. So, we just have to make sure we’re on top of that part, but if he can do some things, Phase Two remember, is there’s no contact, no offense versus defense."

"He’s in a position where he can do everything I think," Reid added.
