Tottenham Hold Two-Point Lead Over West Ham in Premier League Relegation Fight
Only two horses remain in the Premier League survival race. With two games left and Burnley and Wolves already relegated, either Tottenham or West Ham will join them in the Championship next season.
Tottenham sit 17th, two points clear of 18th-placed West Ham after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Monday. Spurs also hold the superior goal difference.
The point kept Tottenham ahead, but Roberto de Zerbi's side missed a chance to pull four points clear of the Hammers. Spurs have no home win in the top flight since Dec. 6. "If we want to win, we have to reduce the mistakes," de Zerbi said.
West Ham sit rooted in trouble after a 1-0 loss to leaders Arsenal on Sunday. Callum Wilson's stoppage-time equalizer got ruled out by video assistant referee. "It's going to be tough [to stay up] - we know it is not in our hands," said manager Nuno Espirito Santo. "We will fight for it and we will keep on fighting."
A West Ham win at Newcastle would lift them to 17th and push Tottenham into the relegation zone by one point. West Ham beat the Magpies 3-1 at home in the league in November.
Any result short of a Hammers win hands the edge back to Tottenham, who could seal safety with a victory at Chelsea. Spurs have won just once at Stamford Bridge since 1990, a 3-1 result in April 2018.
If the fight reaches the final day on May 24, both play at home. Tottenham host Everton, West Ham face Leeds.
The Leeds draw felt like a missed chance. Tottenham deserved a win but lacked finish in front of goal. Still, they hold the driving seat and need a minimum of four points to stay up.
Confidence runs high after eight points from the past four games - two wins, two draws - under de Zerbi. One remaining match is at Chelsea, where Spurs won only once in 36 years.
De Zerbi lifted the side after Igor Tudor's 44-day interim stint went to waste. He has the players responding. West Ham head to Newcastle next; Spurs hope for no points there before getting a result at Chelsea.
West Ham's loss to Arsenal felt defeating amid the VAR call. But Tottenham's draw keeps hope alive for an east London escape.
On the final day, West Ham look favorites at home with one loss in seven (three wins, three draws). Fans roared like against Arsenal, and Leeds have nothing at stake.
If two points separate them, West Ham need former boss David Moyes to beat Tottenham with Everton. A draw won't help due to West Ham's worse goal difference. Everton might win anyway, chasing Europe while Spurs claim just two home wins all season.
West Ham prefer destiny in their hands on the last day, without relying on others. This weekend looms huge. West Ham could drop by Monday or stand 90 minutes from safety.
