Texas Tech Booster Calls Rival Boycott Talk Collusion
Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby admitted to betting on games involving his own team and was initially ruled ineligible for the 2026 season. A Texas judge later granted an injunction that allows him to play.
Some rival schools and the Big 12 Conference have expressed displeasure with the ruling. Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel wrote that the Big Ten Conference plans to meet this week to discuss a league-wide mandate against scheduling Texas Tech in any sport.
Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen has already directed his staff not to schedule future games with Texas Tech. Speculation has also surfaced that the College Football Playoff could exclude the Red Raiders if they qualify.
Texas Tech's top booster, Cody Campbell, addressed the issue on the podcast "Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich." He said any coordinated effort by conferences or schools to avoid playing Texas Tech amounts to collusion.
"That's collusion," Campbell said. "You know, that's an antitrust violation. So, you know, have fun with that one guys. You can't do that."
When asked whether Texas Tech would sue if the College Football Playoff selection committee barred the team, Campbell said, "100%." He pointed to recent court losses by the NCAA on antitrust grounds.
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark told member schools on a conference call that the league is evaluating its options. Campbell argued that schools have allowed players with more serious offenses, including DUIs and assaults, to continue playing without similar boycotts.
Campbell said the reaction to Sorsby's case does not match how other programs have been treated after far more serious incidents.
