Egg thrown at Victor Wembanyama as Knicks fans confront Spurs supporters
An egg was thrown at San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama as security escorted him into a New York City hotel after Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
Footage on social media showed at least one egg thrown toward Wembanyama. The incident follows several clashes between Knicks and Spurs fans after San Antonio’s Game 3 win.
Videos showed Knicks fans confronting Spurs supporters, with some Spurs fans having their jerseys ripped off. Wembanyama condemned the behavior.
"My thoughts of course [are] that we can't forget it's a game," he said. "We're just playing a game out there. I am all for passion, but [with] the respect of each other. It's unacceptable."
ESPN host Mike Greenberg, a New York native, also criticized the actions after Game 4.
"If you’re throwing eggs at Victor Wembanyama and beating up people... threatening ... or doing anything to people who are wearing Spurs jerseys, just know that you are a disgrace," Greenberg said on Thursday’s edition of "Get Up."
A watch party in Bryant Park turned violent after the Spurs’ 115-111 win in Game 3. The New York Police Department said 21 people were arrested — 13 for disorderly conduct and eight for assaulting officers, criminal possession of weapons and menacing.
This year marks the Knicks’ first NBA Finals appearance since 1999, when they lost to the Spurs. New York has not won a title since 1973.
Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday in San Antonio. Game 6, if needed, returns to New York on Tuesday.
