Clarkson’s Farm Struggles as Success Reshapes the Show

By series five, the central tension in Clarkson’s Farm has become hard to ignore. The show was built around an amateur farmer making mistakes in an industry he barely knew. Now the real-world success of those efforts has changed the picture.

Clarkson’s pub, the Farmer’s Dog, drew so many visitors that a nearby field was turned into a 360-space car park. His Diddly Squat farm shop sells branded goods and jars of honey with his face on them. Hawkstone beer, one of his side projects, reported sales of £21.3 million in the year to March 2025 and set a goal of driving Peroni out of business.

Those commercial wins make the show’s familiar bumbling harder to square with its stated aim of showing how tough farming can be. Clarkson’s main complaint this season is the number of pint glasses stolen by tourists.

The new series tries to adjust. It opens with phone footage of Clarkson in hospital after chest pains. He begins weight-loss treatment, eats more yoghurt and is told to rest. The 2024 farmers’ protest appears only briefly, even though he became one of its public faces.

The shift leaves less room for the farming that once drove the programme. When the show does focus on the work, the results stand out. A segment on a postmortem of a dead sheep is both detailed and graphic. Clarkson also travels to the Netherlands to study a potato operation that uses soil data, heat maps and drone spraying after the farm was registered as an airport to simplify permissions.

Those sequences show the host at his best: curious, willing to learn and able to explain technical changes without sentiment. The rest of the series, built around his growing fame and the businesses that come with it, leaves less space for that kind of reporting.
