Sungjae Im's Bunker Shot Hits Grandstand and Returns to Same Bunker at Truist Championship
Every golf shot carries its own quirks, but Sungjae Im faced an extreme one Saturday at the Truist Championship.
The two-time PGA Tour winner landed in a greenside bunker on the par-5 15th hole during the third round. The shot looked routine with ample green to aim at, but Im struck the ball's equator and sent it sailing over the putting surface.
The ball then struck the grandstand behind the green. At first, it seemed Im might catch a break as the ball stayed up on the structure. Instead, it trickled back down into the same bunker from which he had just played his third shot.
Both Im and his playing partner, Tommy Fleetwood, stared in disbelief at the odd sequence.
Im's fourth shot from the bunker came to rest 15 feet away. He missed the par putt and took bogey six on the hole.
Grandstands around PGA Tour greens have drawn complaints over the years. They often act as backstops for errant shots, typically providing relief or a favorable bounce nearer the green when balls hit them.
Im started the third round of the signature event in the lead. He now sits four shots behind leader Alex Fitzpatrick heading into Sunday's final round.
