Chaos broke out at an Oklahoma park over the weekend when gunfire injured nearly two dozen people. Police say new details point to an argument that sparked the violence.

Authorities reported shots rang out after a group began arguing at an unsanctioned party promoted on social media near a campground at Arcadia Lake, just north of Oklahoma City, Sunday night. The Associated Press cited the details.

The shooting left at least three people critically hurt. Police continue searching for suspects, and no arrests have occurred.

Witness Jeremiah Smith, 18, estimated more than 250 people attended the party. He said shots fired after a group of girls argued over boyfriends.

"It just started a whole bunch of chaos," Smith said. "Everybody got scared, dudes was panicking, women was panicking, people seeing their friends fight."

Smith heard shots from different directions for several minutes as he ran toward the lake. Two of his friends suffered gunshot wounds.

At least 18 people went to local hospitals with injuries. One healthcare system reported victims aged 16 to 30.

Edmond police said Monday the event was an unsanctioned gathering promoted online, the latest viral party to disrupt communities nationwide. A flyer online promised food, drinks and "good vibes, good people" at the park's pavilion until midnight.

Edmond Mayor Mark Nash said the shooting happened at a park reservable for large groups. "To our knowledge, there was no reservation through the parks department," Nash said. He added, "We’re already taking steps to review and strengthen park operations, permitting processes and security measures."

The incident followed a shooting hours earlier at a Texas Panhandle party that killed two teens and injured 10 after two people opened fire at an apartment complex Saturday.

The Edmond Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
