Americans should worry about President Trump’s upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Recent White House comments suggest Trump may allow Chinese manufacturers to produce in the United States. This move threatens economic and national security. Members of Congress from both parties plan to fight it.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin is leading bipartisan legislation with Rep. John Moolenaar to ban Chinese car companies from doing business in the US. The measure aims to prevent disruption to the manufacturing economy, job losses for American auto workers and risks to national security.

For decades, the United States pursued globalization on the assumption that economic integration would benefit both sides and create jobs. Billionaires, economists and corporate leaders pushed free trade. Instead, entire industries collapsed. Steel mills shut down, semiconductor production shifted overseas, suppliers moved to Asia, Mexico and elsewhere. Manufacturing communities in Michigan and Pennsylvania lost middle-class jobs.

China ignores free-market rules. Its companies dominate because competitors lack a level playing field. The Chinese government and Communist Party provide massive subsidies, preferential financing, intellectual property advantages, manipulated currency and strategic direction from Beijing. Letting those firms produce in the US would give a geopolitical rival leverage over the economy from inside the country.

The auto industry faces the greatest urgency. Modern vehicles function as rolling computers. Autonomous and connected cars gather vast data: location, driving patterns, camera footage, mapping, personal details on drivers and passengers. Sensors and software track where Americans live, work, worship, get medical care and send children to school. These features aid safety and innovation but demand protection from adversaries.

Slotkin rallied more than 70 House Democrats to warn the administration about Chinese-connected vehicles. They collect and transmit GPS locations, driving behaviors and in-car conversations. Data sent to servers controlled by Chinese entities would reach the Chinese government under national security laws.

More than 50 House Republicans signed a similar letter. Both groups caution that easing barriers for Chinese autos or allowing entry into the US market endangers manufacturing, workers and security. Lawmakers urge Trump to uphold bans and close loopholes for Chinese vehicles assembled in Mexico or Canada under USMCA provisions.

Ford CEO Jim Farley warned that Chinese automakers in the US market would devastate domestic manufacturing. He highlighted data risks from cameras and connected technologies.

The issue centers on resilience and sovereignty. A nation unable to produce critical goods or protect citizen data cannot control its future. The US should accept fair competition from partners with democratic values and market principles. In strategic industries tied to security, stability and privacy, manufacturing and mobility must serve American interests, not an authoritarian rival.

Trump must honor his commitments and block Chinese manufacturing in the US. The effort protects workers, supply chains, privacy and economic independence.
