Jill Biden says she feared Joe Biden was having a stroke during 2024 debate
Former first lady Jill Biden said she thought her husband, President Joe Biden, was having a stroke during his June 2024 debate with Donald Trump.
"I was frightened, because I had never ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never," she told CBS News.
"I don't know what happened," she said. "As I watched it, I thought, 'Oh, my God, he's having a stroke.' And it scared me to death."
Biden struggled with a raspy voice and at one point appeared to lose his train of thought. His campaign said he had been ill. The performance drew sharp criticism from fellow Democrats and led to calls for him to leave the race.
Biden eventually dropped out and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Jill Biden, long one of his closest advisers, was among those who urged him to step aside.
Harris later won the Democratic nomination but lost the general election to Trump. In her memoir she described Biden's decision to run again as "recklessness."
