Rashee Rice jailed for 30 days, faces setbacks in knee rehab
Rashee Rice is serving a 30-day sentence in the Dallas County jail after testing positive for marijuana, a violation of his probation.
The Kansas City Chiefs receiver underwent knee surgery last week to remove loose bodies that caused inflammation in his right knee. He was expected to miss the team's offseason program and return for training camp in July.
Rice's jail time overlaps with the first month of his rehabilitation, which could slow his recovery. A medical source said doctors would have advised delaying the surgery if they had known he would miss that period.
Rice was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation after his 2024 car crash, in which he was speeding and injured multiple people. He was convicted in 2025 on two third-degree felony counts of causing a collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury.
The timing of the violation also affects his contract situation. Rice has already missed most of the 2024 season with a knee injury and served a six-game NFL suspension. The Chiefs have delayed discussions about a possible contract extension, according to a league source.
Top wide receivers in the league earn between $30 million and $42 million per season on average. Rice risks losing millions if his recovery is delayed and his standing with the team is damaged.
