Prince William May Bring Family to U.S. for World Cup and 250th Anniversary
Rumors have circulated in Britain that Prince William is preparing a trip to the United States linked to the FIFA World Cup and America’s 250th anniversary. Author Christopher Andersen told Fox News Digital that the Prince of Wales may be considering a family visit that would include his children.
A Middleton family friend told Andersen the family is “over the moon with excitement,” especially since Prince George is “a passionate soccer fan.” Andersen said the trip would mark the first known visit to the U.S. by two future kings traveling together and the first time the Wales children have set foot on American soil.
The possible visit would come shortly after King Charles III and Queen Camilla completed a four-day state visit to Washington, New York and Virginia in April. The trip was requested by the British government to mark America’s 250th birthday.
Andersen noted that Prince William serves as president of England’s Football Association and is expected to cheer on the national team. He said the success of the king and queen’s visit, along with Kate Middleton’s trip to Italy, prompted palace officials to approve another high-profile royal appearance.
A Kensington Palace spokesperson told Fox News Digital there are currently no public plans for a trip to the U.S., though the palace hopes for a strong performance from England.
Members of the royal family sometimes travel privately for personal reasons. Andersen said even experienced royal watchers were surprised when Kate Middleton made her first trip abroad in more than two years to visit Reggio Emilia, Italy.
The Times of London reported in December 2025 that the king and Prince William were expected to make separate visits to the United States in 2026. A source said the king was highly likely to travel in April, while William was expected to visit later when the U.S. hosts the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
England’s match is scheduled for June 27 in New Jersey. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich said she would not be surprised if William and his family made a quick summer trip. She noted that William has spoken about enjoying the atmosphere at football matches and has said he believes England can win the World Cup again.
Royal commentator Amanda Matta said a family visit would make sense as the Waleses seek to become more visible internationally. She said it could combine a World Cup appearance with broader “soft diplomacy” tied to the 250th anniversary commemorations.
Andersen said his sources indicate Kate Middleton would accompany the family. Royal protocol bars direct heirs from traveling together once the eldest child turns 12, a rule that took effect when Prince George turned 12 last year. Kate is not expected to allow her son, who turns 13 in July, to fly across the Atlantic without a parent.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said he does not believe the children are likely to join a lengthy trip. He said any visit would likely be saved for another occasion, though it would align with the king’s recent expressions of closeness between the U.K. and the U.S.
