Police Arrest 9, Seize 77 ATVs After Bay Bridge Takeover in California
Nine people were arrested and 77 all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes seized during an investigation into a chaotic takeover that shut down traffic on the Bay Bridge in California, police said.
The Oakland Police Department announced the crackdown at a news conference on Monday. Officers had set up a blockade across the bridge to stop the mayhem the previous day.
Police drone video showed dozens of bikers weaving through lanes on the bridge before officers' vehicles blocked them. Another clip captured law enforcement officers trying to retrieve a person who jumped into the water while fleeing.
Oakland Police Chief James Beere said at the news conference that the joint effort allowed officers to trap bikers on the bridge.
In a statement, the department said more than 100 Oakland officers worked with regional partners on Sunday to coordinate arrests and vehicle seizures.
This is not the first time the city has dealt with illegal takeovers.
San Francisco Police Chief Derek Luth said at the news conference that the takeovers have become a regional problem. He noted that his agency and the California Highway Patrol seized 85 bikes in March when bikers tried to take over the bridge. Last year, San Francisco police seized more than 140 vehicles related to takeovers.
Beere added, "There are going to be more arrests. If you made it away yesterday [Sunday] just expect a knock at your door, and if it warrants and it's legally just, you'll be arrested as well."
