OpenTable Ranks Top 100 Brunch Spots in America, Led by California
A new OpenTable list of America's Top 100 Brunch Restaurants shows family celebrations for mom concentrated in a few states.
The rankings come from diner data on reservations and ratings. California dominates with 19 restaurants, followed by New York with 12, Texas with 11 and Illinois with 10. More than half of U.S. states have no entries.
That clustering reflects brunch's evolution into a premium draw in major markets. "Brunch has become a major factor for hospitality in general in the last 10 years — from boozy brunches to sophisticated nice afternoons with the family," said Robert Mahon, managing partner of Mahon Hospitality Group in New York City.
In dense cities focused on experiences, restaurants cater to demand beyond basic meals, Mahon told Fox News Digital.
"We're living in an experience economy," added Bo Bryant, founder of Arizona-based Brunch Kitchen & Cocktails and a restaurant strategist. "People aren't just going out to eat anymore. They're going out to feel something — to mark a moment."
Brunch sits at the intersection of food, social ritual and affordable luxury, Bryant said.
Demand surges on Mother's Day. Mahon expects reservations to rise by 30 or 40 percent at minimum. Bryant said some spots book up 10 weeks ahead.
"The trend is clear: People are booking earlier every year," he said. "If you want your first choice, you need to secure it well in advance."
"Breakfast is a meal. Brunch has become an experience — and people are genuinely willing to pay for that feeling."
Restaurants adapt with streamlined menus or prix fixe options for efficiency on busy days. The aim is to keep food pacing correct, Mahon said.
Menus also feature creative, indulgent items and cocktails to boost spending.
Fox News Digital contacted the National Restaurant Association in Washington, D.C., for comment.
OpenTable's list skips local diners, neighborhood cafés and walk-in spots where many families celebrate without reservations.
Bryant described a divide among diners. "The first loves the Sunday ritual — the buzz, the crowd, the social theater of it all. For them, the scene is part of the appeal," he said.
