Melania Trump Draws Mixed Reactions to Mother's Day Message on Family and Careers
First lady Melania Trump published a Mother's Day message in The Washington Post that highlighted women's ability to succeed in motherhood and business, but it drew sharp criticism for its tone and timing.
"A mother’s devotion to her child is unmatched," she wrote, adding that mothers often act as a child’s first teachers of empathy, aspiration and discipline. She said mothers play a central role in shaping their children’s values, character and sense of responsibility.
Women can pursue careers while keeping family at the center, Mrs. Trump wrote. "Yes, women can thrive in both motherhood and business," she said, noting that strong support systems are often essential for balancing both. She also stressed self-care, writing that taking time to restore energy is "not selfish, but an important part of caring for others."
The column touched on family, tradition and mothers' role in future American generations. "America can restore the honor of motherhood," she wrote, adding that her first priority is to be a mom, first lady and wife. She noted that feminism had often placed career above family, with consequences to the nation.
Just before Mother's Day, she described the miracle of motherhood. "A mother is awestruck when she welcomes her child into the world," she said. "After nine months, the miracle of life creates a fascinating bond between mother and child with each breath. Day by day, this bond deepens, bringing forth emotions never felt before." She added, "Only a mother can carry this type of powerful connection with her child, which is also too profound for words."
Reactions poured in online. Some praised the piece. "Beautifully written," one person wrote. "Motherhood has never been dishonored," said another, responding to her call to restore its role. "I admire this sentiment," a user added. "You have raised a fine son. I hope he appreciates you." Others called it "a lovely tribute to mothers" and said Mrs. Trump is "a class act."
Critics pushed back. One commenter said it felt out of touch with working mothers' struggles. "Why would we take advice from her?" another asked. Some said it ignored realities like rising costs and childcare access. One X user wrote, "You have no clue what it takes to raise children in today's world."
Mrs. Trump has discussed parenting before. In a Fox & Friends interview ahead of President Trump’s second term, she said children should be guided early, then given independence. "We teach them, we guide them, and then we give them the wings to fly," she said. She planned to split time between the White House and New York, where son Barron Trump attended New York University’s main campus. Recent reports say he has transferred to NYU's Washington, D.C. campus.
