A man faces arrest on suspicion of attempted murder after a car struck five people in a town centre.

Nottinghamshire Police reported one man with life-threatening injuries and four others hurt when a Vauxhall Astra hit them in Market Place, Arnold, shortly before 01:10 BST on Saturday. Officers believe the driver targeted the group after an altercation in the town centre.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Police added that counter terrorism officers took no part in the investigation and found no indication of any ongoing threat to the wider public.

A cordon remained at Market Place and junctions from Gedling Road to Derby Street, Hallams Lane and Central Avenue for most of Saturday.

Det Ch Insp Ruby Burrow, who leads the investigation, said: "We have shared this important update with the family of the seriously injured man and they are being supported by specialist officers."

"We would ask that people do not speculate about the circumstances around the incident and respect the privacy of those involved."

"Our investigation remains ongoing and we are keeping an open mind while these extensive inquiries continue."

Police urged anyone with dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile phone footage to contact them.
