Justice Department to Charge Raúl Castro in 1996 Cuba Shootdown
The Justice Department is expected to announce criminal charges against Cuba's former leader Raúl Castro on Wednesday.
Castro, 94, the brother of longtime dictator Fidel Castro, faces indictment on charges tied to the 1996 shootdown of two planes operated by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue, U.S. officials said.
The department had scheduled an event at Miami's Freedom Tower on Wednesday during a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the shootdown. Jose Basulto, founder of Brothers to the Rescue, said he hoped the announcement would be Castro's indictment, adding, "it's time for them to pay."
