Jon Rahm Denies Regret Over LIV Golf Move Amid Funding Crisis Reports
Jon Rahm's departure from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf in late 2023 seemed like a major blow to the tour. The two-time major winner, fresh off his 2023 Masters victory, joined Bryson DeChambeau and gave LIV two of the best four players in the world, alongside Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.
Rahm's move raised hopes it could lead to a merger between the tours. But the situation has reversed. LIV now faces a funding crisis and doubts about operations beyond 2026, while the PGA Tour holds the advantage.
Several players have pledged to stay with LIV or avoid returning to the PGA Tour. DeChambeau's contract ends after this season. Rahm, one of golf's most competitive players at age 31, secured an agreement with the DP World Tour to play in its events if needed.
Before this week's PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club outside Philadelphia, Golf Digest's Shane Ryan asked Rahm about his 2023 decision and regrets given LIV's troubles. "I was never like thinking that I was going to be any sort of weight that would tip the scales to make things come together. That was never an argument in my mind," Rahm said.
"When asked if that was the case for people to come together, that would be great. I never made a decision based on that."
Rahm said he never second-guesses decisions. "Now, I would also say I've made a lot of decisions in my life, and I've never gone back thinking, ‘Oh, had I known this again, I would do X and Y different,’" he explained. "I could do that about 15 different golf shots on the golf course every single day. If I lived my life like that as a golfer, I would be a very pessimistic person … just to speculate on what could have done, what could have been different doesn't really make much sense."
