Japan beats Tunisia 4-0 at World Cup
Japan beat Tunisia 4-0 in Monterrey on the second matchday of the World Cup group stage.
Tunisia struggled from the start. Herve Renard shouted instructions from the sideline, but Japan controlled the game and gave their opponents little space.
Japan took the lead in the 69th minute. After a spell of possession, the ball reached Ueda, who flicked it around the corner. Ito ran onto the pass, held off a defender and rolled the ball under the goalkeeper.
Ito scored again in the 83rd minute. Sano crossed from the right, and Ueda headed the ball into the net.
Japan made several substitutions in the second half. Doan, Kamada, Tomiyasu and Nakamura left the field, replaced by Sugawara, J Suzuki, Seko and Y Suzuki.
Tunisia made changes of their own. Ben Hmida came on for Bronn, Gharbi replaced Saad, and Chaouat came on for Tounekti. Hannibal had Tunisia’s best chance of the half but failed to connect with a low cross.
Japan finished the match with strong defensive work and patient build-up play. Tunisia defended deeper after the break but could not create sustained pressure.
The result leaves Japan with a strong chance of advancing from the group.
