Hearts Hold Top Spot After Late Celtic Penalty Drama Sets Up Title Decider
Hearts clung to the top of the Scottish Premiership table after a chaotic night left them one win or draw away from the title. They thumped Falkirk 3-0 at Tynecastle while Celtic salvaged a 2-2 draw at Motherwell thanks to a late penalty, setting up a decisive clash at Celtic Park on Saturday.
Fans at Tynecastle wept and buried their heads in their hands during the first half. Hearts led 2-0 and Celtic trailed 1-0 at Fir Park, making the hosts champions for 12 minutes. Blair Spittal added a third goal late to seal the victory.
Motherwell hosted Celtic in a match full of twists. Both sides had penalty claims denied before Daizen Maeda equalized to make it 1-1 and cut Hearts' lead to three points. Benjamin Nygren then put Celtic 2-1 ahead.
Motherwell fought back in the closing minutes. They hit the post and forced a save, then scored on the rebound to level at 2-2. Tynecastle erupted as if Hearts had scored themselves.
Deep into stoppage time, referee John Beaton awarded Celtic a penalty after VAR review. Motherwell's Sam Nicholson raised his arm above Auston Trusty, but many saw it as a header. A Motherwell fan was caught on radio saying, "The game's done."
Celtic converted the spot kick. Hearts manager Derek McInnes called it a "disgusting" decision that made him feel "we're up against everybody." Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou said it would not have been given anywhere else.
Gary Lineker questioned the call on social media. It marked the second big decision against Hearts in a week after a denied penalty at Motherwell last Saturday.
McInnes urged a siege mentality. Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland called Saturday "a 90-minute cup final." He noted Hearts beat Celtic home and away this season and said the team would have accepted this position at the start.
No team has beaten Hearts by three clear goals in the league this season. Celtic did it most recently. Hearts lead despite smaller finances and have topped the table for most of the campaign after 37 games.
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill plans to leave soon. He praised his players' character for digging out of trouble. A Hearts win or draw on Saturday makes them champions.
