HBO Confirms Harry Potter TV Series Season 2 Filming Starts This Autumn
HBO has confirmed a second season for its Harry Potter TV series, with filming to start this autumn.
The network did not reveal a title for season two, but the series is expected to adapt the second book in J.K. Rowling's saga, The Chamber of Secrets.
The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max this Christmas.
Writer Jon Brown, who contributed to season one and worked on Succession, has been elevated to co-showrunner alongside season one showrunner Francesca Gardiner.
HBO earlier stated plans to adapt all seven books in Rowling's series over a decade, with one book per season.
In a statement, Gardiner said the return to filming for season two this autumn fits into plans for overlapping production schedules as season one wraps up.
She added that adding Brown as co-showrunner was key to maintaining momentum.
"I've loved working with Jon from the very first day we met. I have huge admiration for his writing, but he's also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person."
Gardiner also acts as executive producer with director Mark Mylod, known from Succession, who helmed multiple episodes of the first season.
Brown voiced his excitement about continuing on the series and thanked Gardiner and HBO for their faith in him to keep the journey going.
"Seems you're never too old to get your invitation to Hogwarts," he added.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone covers Harry's first year at Hogwarts as he adjusts to the magical world and his identity as a wizard.
The first trailer came out in March, showing familiar book moments, key sets, and more looks at the main characters.
Young actors Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley emerged from an open casting call of more than 30,000 children.
No casting has been announced for Harry's nemesis Lord Voldemort, though names like Oscar winner Cillian Murphy and Andy Serkis have surfaced as possibilities.
Last month, Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed the original Dark Lord, told BBC's The Claudia Winkleman Show that Doctor Strange actor Tilda Swinton would be fantastic in the role.
