FBI Searches Office of Virginia Sen. Louise Lucas and Her Cannabis Dispensary
The FBI searched the Portsmouth, Virginia, office of longtime state Sen. L. Louise Lucas on Wednesday, a bureau spokesperson told CBS News.
Lucas played a central role in advancing a new congressional map through Virginia's legislature that would add four Democratic-leaning seats. Voters approved the map in an April ballot referendum, but it remains on hold pending a decision from the Virginia Supreme Court on its legality.
The FBI spokesperson said in a statement that the investigation continues and there is no threat to public safety.
Federal law enforcement officials also searched a cannabis dispensary co-owned by Lucas, the spokesperson confirmed.
The specific focus of the investigation and the connection to the court-authorized activity remain unclear.
Fox News first reported the law enforcement activity. Lucas told Fox News she had no idea what the FBI agents were doing at her office.
Lucas did not respond to multiple attempts by CBS News to reach her. Her office provided no immediate comment on a request.
Now 82, Lucas first won election to the Virginia General Assembly in 1991. She serves as Senate president pro tempore. Earlier this year, as she helped push the Democratic redistricting plan, she took to social media to taunt Republicans, President Trump and the state's Democratic U.S. senators.
