Cruise Ship MV Hondius Heads to Canary Islands After Three Hantavirus Deaths
The MV Hondius cruise ship is heading to Spain's Canary Islands for passenger evacuation after three days anchored near Cape Verde amid a hantavirus outbreak.
Three people died either on board or after traveling on the ship. The vessel departed from Argentina a month ago and will dock at Granadilla port in Tenerife, Spain's Health Minister Monica Garcia said Wednesday.
All passengers will receive medical assessments upon arrival. Those from abroad who are fit to travel will be repatriated to their home countries, Garcia said.
Tenerife residents expressed concern to the BBC about the ship's arrival. "Could end up with a problem on the island," one said. "I don't think it's a good idea... but people do need help," another resident added.
