Christopher Nolan Casts Lupita Nyong'o as Helen in Odyssey Adaptation, Sparks Casting Debate
Christopher Nolan has cast Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong'o as Helen, the figure described in Homer's Odyssey as the most beautiful woman in the world with white skin and light hair, in his upcoming film adaptation set for release on July 17.
The project brings together a star-studded lineup including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron and Elliot Page. A Time magazine interview published Tuesday confirmed these roles amid speculation. Damon praised Nolan's approach, saying the director is "very faithful to Homer because that’s not somebody you rewrite. But thematically, what he looked at was really interesting."
Nolan emphasized historical accuracy in other areas. His team constructed a genuinely seaworthy ship capable of sailing the Mediterranean for Odysseus and his crew. He instructed composer Ludwig Göransson to avoid an orchestra in the score. Göransson noted, "It's not like the orchestra existed back then."
The director also cast rapper Travis Scott, explaining, "I cast him because I wanted to nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap." Time reported that Nolan spoke with pride about the extensive research across production departments. It added that the oldest depictions of Homeric characters reflect people from Homer's era, supporting portrayals true to that first audience.
Critics have questioned the casting in light of these authenticity efforts. Matt Damon, with his Nordic background, also diverges from a typical Mediterranean appearance for Odysseus. The choices contrast with Nolan's track record of grounded realism in films like Batman Begins, Dunkirk, Interstellar and Oppenheimer, which won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.
