CBS Evening News Broadcast from Taiwan Interrupted by Cameraman's Medical Emergency
A live broadcast of CBS Evening News was interrupted Wednesday after a cameraman suffered a medical emergency on set in Taipei, Taiwan. The segment cut away mid-report as anchor Tony Dokoupil was covering President Donald Trump’s upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Dokoupil suddenly stopped his report to check on the crew member who had collapsed offscreen. "You will hear a lot about American decline and the rise of a powerful new China — is he OK?" Dokoupil asked as the sound of the fall was heard.
"We’re gonna take a quick break. We have a medical emergency here. We’re calling a doctor," he added. Another voice from the set said, "Call the doctor please."
The broadcast switched to CBS News chief correspondent Matt Gutman in New York, who signed off briefly on Dokoupil’s behalf.
CBS issued a statement saying the cameraman is okay and recovering after the health emergency.
Dokoupil was anchoring from Taipei for Trump’s two-day summit with Xi in Beijing. The network could not secure visas in time to report from mainland China.
Taiwan sits at the center of the high-stakes talks amid China’s geopolitical tensions with the island, CBS said. Dokoupil’s report covered what is at stake and why it matters for Americans.
Trump and Xi are set to discuss artificial intelligence, Chinese control of Taiwan and international trade. The talks come as the U.S.-Iran conflict continues.
