Bubble Up Lemon-Lime Soda Gains Cult Following After Century on Shelves
A lemon-lime soda once common on store shelves nationwide has become a rare find with a dedicated fan base.
Bubble Up debuted in 1919, a decade before 7UP. Fans seek out the citrus drink for its natural ingredients and retro glass bottles.
The brand, known for its 'kiss of lemon, kiss of lime' slogan, relied on the Coca-Cola bottler network for distribution until Sprite arrived.
Bubble Up faced challenges over the years. Ownership changed hands multiple times, distribution faltered and the company filed for bankruptcy.
Dad's Root Beer makers bought the brand in 2007. They produce it in limited runs today.
The soda tastes more natural than rivals, thanks to pure cane sugar and lemon and lime oils instead of high-fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors, The Tasting Table reported.
'I love Bubble Up,' one reviewer wrote on BeveragesDirect.com. 'Been drinking it since the early 1950s. My drink.'
'Best lemon-lime drink to date,' another said. 'No aftertaste as in 7UP plus the cane sugar is the key.'
'As wonderful tasting as I remember from my childhood,' a third review read.
The premium drink sells for up to $3.49 per 12-ounce bottle. Shoppers find it at some Albertsons stores, on Amazon and at specialty soda outlets.
