Biggest Underachievers in NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA Named
Several North American sports franchises stand out as the biggest underachievers across the four major leagues, despite rosters packed with elite talent over decades.
These teams saw Hall of Famers and All-Stars pass through without winning a championship. In the NBA, the Phoenix Suns take the top spot. The Suns featured future Hall of Famers Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Steve Nash, Charles Barkley, Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Dennis Johnson and Paul Westphal. All-Stars like Bradley Beal, Amar'e Stoudemire, Dan Majerle, Danny Ainge and Shaquille O'Neal also played there. Phoenix reached the finals in 1993, losing to the Chicago Bulls, and in 2021, falling to the Milwaukee Bucks, but never won a Larry O'Brien Trophy.
In the NHL, the Buffalo Sabres earned the nod over teams like the Vancouver Canucks. Buffalo sent top draft picks Jack Eichel to Vegas and Sam Reinhart to Florida. Eichel led the NHL in playoff points when Vegas won the 2023 Stanley Cup and posted 94 points in the 2025 season. Reinhart scored the game-winning goal in Florida's 2024 Game 7 win over Edmonton and added four goals in their Cup clincher last season. Other stars included Pat LaFontaine, Gilbert Perreault, Chris Drury, Ryan Miller and Dominik Hasek. The Sabres have never won a Cup.
The NFL's Minnesota Vikings lead the underachievers in football. They had Hall of Famers Randy Moss and Cris Carter on the same 1998 roster with Randall McDaniel and John Randle. Randall Cunningham bordered on Hall of Fame status. Others wore purple and gold: Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page, Steve Hutchinson and Jared Allen. Adrian Peterson and Harrison Smith will likely enter the Hall. Minnesota never won a Super Bowl.
In MLB, the Seattle Mariners top the list with no close rivals. Ken Griffey Jr., Ichiro Suzuki, Alex Rodriguez and Randy Johnson, four of the best ever at their positions, played there. Griffey, Rodriguez and Johnson teamed up in the mid-to-late 1990s alongside Edgar Martinez, another Hall of Famer. Ichiro, Felix Hernandez, Adrian Beltre and Robinson Cano followed in the 2000s and 2010s. Seattle never won a World Series or even an AL pennant.
