Adam Yates Withdraws from Giro d'Italia After Concussion in Massive Crash
Britain's Adam Yates has withdrawn from the Giro d'Italia after sustaining a concussion in a heavy crash on Saturday.
The 33-year-old rider hit a barrier at high speed during a pileup on a wet descent that involved about 30 cyclists. Two teammates suffered fractures and went to the hospital.
Yates finished the stage to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria but lost 14 minutes to the leaders.
His UAE Team Emirates-XRG squad said Yates had heavy abrasions and a laceration to his left ear. "He was initially assessed on site for concussion, and cleared to continue, but subsequently he has shown delayed concussive symptoms. He will not take the start of stage three."
This marks the first Grand Tour Yates has not finished. He has seven top-10 overall finishes in such races.
Teammates Jay Vine of Australia and Marc Soler of Spain sustained serious injuries in the crash. Vine had a concussion and an elbow fracture, while Soler suffered a pelvic fracture.
The team stated that Yates, Vine and Soler would remain under medical observation before heading home in the coming days to recover.
Yates' twin brother Simon won the Giro last year.
Guillermo Silva Thomas of Uruguay leads the race after two stages.
