US and Mexico Seize 1,990 Pounds of Cocaine from Go-Fast Boat in Pacific
United States and Mexican law enforcement seized dozens of packages of cocaine from a go-fast vessel in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico's coast. The action formed part of several operations to curb the global flow of illicit drugs.
Customs and Border Protection air assets first detected the speedboat, according to the Joint Interagency Task Force South. That group includes 21 partner nations, among them the U.S. and Mexico. The announcement came in a social media post. Crew members on the boat tossed bales of drugs into the sea after spotting the aircraft.
Mexican navy forces responded swiftly and recovered the cargo. They seized about 1,990 pounds of cocaine, the task force reported. Photos captured the recovery efforts from the water.
Navy personnel also fast-roped Marines onto the vessel's deck, officials said. The task force gave no details on arrests.
This bust was one of at least three recent Mexican navy operations in the Pacific. In the first, forces seized 22 packages of cocaine and rescued 11 shipwrecked people from a vessel near Guerrero. The group got medical care before immigration authorities took custody, the navy said in a social media post.
In a second operation, the navy found seven packages of cocaine during an inspection of a container ship docked in Manzanillo. Three stowaways were detained as well.
The third effort saw recovery of 34 more packages of illicit cargo from a boat near Acapulco. Those packages went to the Oaxacan coast for destruction.
The navy did not provide dates for the operations or clarify which one got CBP help. It reported seizing 65.5 tons of illicit cocaine under the current administration.
