A UK government minister resigned on Thursday, citing frustration with Labour's slow progress on tackling violence against women and girls, particularly online child sex abuse.

The minister, who has worked closely with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the issue for years, praised his knowledge and desire to address the problem. She noted that past advances came only after her threats amid major scandals, such as the Mandelson saga, which prompted Number 10 to act to prove its credentials.

Over a year ago, she presented solutions developed by civil servants to end children's ability in the UK to take naked images of themselves. She said 91 percent of online child sex abuse involves self-generated content by children who are groomed, tricked, and exploited. Technology exists to prevent children from taking such images on every phone and device in the country, she added.

It took her a year to secure Starmer's agreement to even threaten legislation on the issue—not to legislate, but merely to threaten. She called this incremental change, with nothing bold about it. The announcement was due in March but remains a promise for June, which she no longer believes. She questioned how many children were left without protection during the delays over concerns about tech bosses.

Labour governments come rarely, she wrote, and every one in her lifetime has driven major progress. While acknowledging Starmer's deep care, she stressed that deeds matter more than words. She said the government is not seizing the opportunity with enough urgency, and she cannot keep waiting for crises to force faster action.

The minister said she wants a Labour government to succeed and will work for its popularity, but she sees no change matching her or the country's expectations. As a result, she cannot continue serving as a minister under the current leadership.
