Two Illegal Immigrants Charged with Capital Murder in Dallas Unborn Baby Shooting
The Department of Homeland Security issued a sharp statement Thursday after two illegal immigrants in Dallas faced capital murder charges in the shooting death of an unborn child.
"These monsters shot multiple people and killed an unborn baby," Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in the statement. "They now face multiple felony charges, including homicide and aggravated assault. This is an unspeakable crime, and these criminal illegal aliens should never have been in our country in the first place."
"Thankfully, Dallas cooperates with ICE, so together with our partners we will ensure these criminals can never again terrorize our communities," the statement added.
Yeremy Alexander Zapata Aleman, 17, from Honduras, and Keyner Ariel Calero Jiron, 20, from Nicaragua, both entered the U.S. illegally, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The pair stand accused in the May 3 incident around 12:40 a.m., which began with an argument in a 7-Eleven parking lot.
The pregnant victim rode with another person who confronted the suspects from a vehicle before driving off from the lot. The suspects then followed, KDFW reported.
Calero Jiron drove the car when gunfire erupted, striking the victim and her unborn child. Bullets also hit another vehicle, but its driver escaped injury.
The victim, 22 weeks pregnant, told police about the baby. Officers rushed her to Baylor Hospital for a cesarean section. The child did not survive.
Police later spotted Calero Jiron's car. He led them on a chase that ended in a crash. Officers found cocaine and MDMA inside.
Both suspects face capital murder charges, five counts of felony aggravated assault, and one count of cocaine possession. Calero Jiron also faces a charge of unlawfully carrying a weapon.
