Two Dead After Car Strikes Crowd in Leipzig
Two people died after a car drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Monday afternoon, Mayor Burkhard Jung said.
Authorities arrested the suspected perpetrator, Jung said. They have not determined a motivation.
Police confirmed the car struck several people in the central Grimmaische Straße area before the driver fled the scene.
The driver was later apprehended, and police said there is currently no further danger from him.
Radio Leipzig reported at about 17:35 (15:35 GMT) that police declared the danger over and cordoned off the area around the square.
Unverified social media images showed a yellow emergency helicopter near the scene along with several ambulances.
