Trump Orders Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation and Blue Paint Job for US 250th Birthday
President Donald Trump has commissioned the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to make Washington DC "safe and beautiful" ahead of the nation's 250th birthday this summer. Contractors began work last week to paint the pool blue.
The historic pool stretches 2,030 feet (620 meters) between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It has long suffered leaks, structural deterioration, faulty pipes, algae growth and bird droppings.
Trump said the project to restore and paint the pool would solve the leaking problem and make it more beautiful than ever. It remains unclear whether the repairs can fix the underlying structural issues at the site, which dates to 1922.
The BBC spoke to tourists and locals near the pool, who offered mixed views on the renovation.
