Texas Republicans have selected state Sen. Mayes Middleton as their nominee for attorney general, CBS News projects.

Middleton defeated U.S. Rep. Chip Roy in Tuesday's runoff. Neither candidate reached a majority in the March 3, 2026 primary, where Middleton received 39 percent and Roy received 32 percent.

Middleton, a state senator from the Houston area, said Roy's record against former President Donald Trump hurt him with voters. "The reason why [Roy] did so badly on Election Day is because his record of fighting President Trump caught up to him," Middleton told CBS News Texas. He added that Roy had called for Trump's impeachment and praised Liz Cheney.

Roy rejected those criticisms in his own interview with the station.

Middleton will run to succeed Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is leaving the post to run for U.S. Senate. He faces Democrat Nathan Johnson in the Nov. 6, 2026 general election.
