Rape and Strangulation Reported at UC Santa Barbara Party School
Students at the University of California in Santa Barbara are on edge after police reported a rape and strangulation on campus over the weekend.
The school, ranked the top party school in the country, sent a university-wide alert at 10 p.m. Saturday to notify students, faculty and staff about the incident.
The UCSB Police Department's daily log shows the report came from campus housing.
The student newspaper, The Daily Nexus, said the suspect and victim met at a party in the Isla Vista neighborhood near campus and did not know each other before the assault.
UCSB police have released no suspect information or further details.
UC Santa Barbara has held the No. 1 spot on Niche Best Colleges' party school list for two years.
The campus has seen more crimes in recent years, including sexual assaults, weapons arrests and burglaries.
Data show more than 100 reported rape cases from 2022 to 2024.
Campus police issue an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report each year with data from the prior year. The latest, released in October, covers through 2024.
