Portland police recovered at least six underage girls last month during a sweeping operation against prostitution-related activity, officers announced Thursday.

The girls, ages 13 to 17, were found after enforcement initiatives that began on April 15, according to the Portland Police Human Trafficking Unit and East Precinct.

Sex trafficking and prostitution have long affected Southeast Portland's 82nd Avenue corridor. Last month's effort produced what authorities described as a stunning number of victims, far above the usual amount.

"While it is not unusual for HTU members to rescue providers from their traffickers, it is unusual to see so many children in this short a period," officials said. "It's not clear whether this is a new trend or simply an anomaly."

The girls received help from Portland Police Bureau Victim Services and Safety Compass, which supports people under 25 who identify as survivors of commercial sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

The Oregon Department of Human Services is aiding reunification with out-of-state parents or placement into care.

Human trafficking cases often feature victims reluctant to report crimes or engage the justice system because of trauma bonds, repeated abuse and fear of retaliation, authorities said.

The Human Trafficking Unit applies a victim-centered, trauma-informed approach to assist survivors.

Investigators continue building cases against alleged traffickers and sex buyers. No names have been released.
