NFL Executives Deny Vrabel-Russini Scandal Influenced 2026 Kickoff Game Pick
NFL executives insist the drama of the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal played no role in choosing the New England Patriots as the opponent for the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the 2026 regular-season kickoff game.
The league maintains it weighed only football factors and the Super Bowl's reach. "Look, we focused on the football game and the reach of the Super Bowl, and that alone is an incredible story," NFL Executive Vice President Hans Schroeder said Friday on a league conference call.
Schroeder stressed that the NFL ignored the offseason shadow over the Patriots. That shadow followed photos of head coach Vrabel holding hands and embracing former The Athletic reporter Russini on the roof of a private bungalow at a Sedona, Arizona, resort.
The images and later ones prompted Russini to resign, delete her social media accounts, and drew repeated questions for Vrabel in press conferences. Vrabel also skipped the last day of the April draft to spend time with his family in Utah and get counseling.
"How do we deliver the best game into the best window?" Schroeder said, explaining the Super Bowl rematch as the opener. "And in this case, it felt like that rematch is going to be the most exciting when you can start it out of the box."
"...We liked the idea of really celebrating the Seahawks, giving them a moment to start this year to celebrate their last year. And so we like the idea of opening on NBC on Wednesday, and really using that as a chance to celebrate the rematch, but celebrate the Seattle specifically."
The approach matches the NFL's hands-off stance on the Vrabel-Russini matter. The league stated early that Vrabel faced no violation of the Personal Conduct Policy from the photos and rumors.
Commissioner Roger Goodell called it a club matter for the Patriots at the NFL Draft.
Other teams and fans have not stayed quiet. The Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings referenced the coach's relationship with the former reporter in Thursday schedule release videos. The Chargers' version drew widespread notice.
The Patriots faced backlash on their own social media Sunday with a Mother's Day post. Fans in replies highlighted the irony given the coach's apparent impact on the mother of his children.
The mockery figures to continue. The Patriots have moved past the draft and schedule release, along with players facing questions about their coach. Vrabel likely will dodge further queries absent new photos or developments.
Preseason games and nine regular-season road contests in 2026 will expose the team to rival fans. Those crowds may fixate on the scandal more than football when facing New England.
