Newark Mayor Ras Baraka Wins Re-election, Avoids Runoff
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka won re-election Tuesday, surpassing 50% of the vote against seven challengers and avoiding a runoff in November.
The Democratic mayor, seeking a fourth term leading New Jersey's largest city, clinched a majority in the nonpartisan race, according to the Associated Press.
Baraka gained national attention last year when ICE agents arrested him during an anti-ICE protest outside a federal immigration detention center in Newark.
The arrest occurred on May 9, 2025, after Baraka tried and failed to join a congressional delegation's tour of the facility, which he opposed reopening as part of President Donald Trump's second-term crackdown on illegal immigration.
Baraka ranks among the nation's most progressive mayors.
