Labour's Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election, clearing a path for him to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the party leadership.
"Everyone knows that politics isn't working," Burnham said in his acceptance speech. "Tonight could, just could, be the turning point."
Burnham has said he would enter any Labour leadership contest. He would need the backing of at least 81 Labour MPs to stand.
The new MP for Makerfield, who served in cabinet under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, said he always planned to return to Westminster to finish what he started and help the north of England reach its potential.
