King Charles, Queen Camilla Join Stars for King's Trust 50th Anniversary
King Charles and Queen Camilla joined Hollywood stars and musicians Monday night for the 50th anniversary of the King's Trust at the Royal Albert Hall.
George Clooney and his wife Amal attended the celebration with Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Idris Elba. Performers included Rita Ora, Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and Sir Rod Stewart.
The King founded the trust in 1976 as Prince of Wales to combat youth unemployment.
During an interval, Sir Rod congratulated the King on his recent America visit. "May I say, well done in the Americas. You were superb, absolutely superb, put that little ratbag in his place," he told him. The King laughed off the remark.
Charles arrived in the royal box as singer Ruby Turner and the audience performed the National Anthem. Hosts Ant and Dec led the show, which featured Jools Holland, Craig David and Anne-Marie.
Awards went to young people aided by the charity who achieved success. Asylum seeker Musa, who fled Sudan and settled in Glasgow, received the L'Oreal Paris Rising Star Award. The King's Trust Explore program connected him with others, and he now works for a landscaping company there.
Naina, raised in rural India, had dropped out of school and studied alone at night. A partnership between the trust and the Aga Khan Foundation helped her return, and she now trains other girls to stay in education. She won the Amal Clooney Women's Empowerment award.
Brandon from Chorley, Lancashire, earned the Homesense Young Achiever Award. Long-term unemployment hurt his mental health, but a trust Business Administration program led to a work placement and a steady job at the same company.
At night's end, Charles and Camilla traded places with Ant and Dec, joining performers on stage while the hosts took the royal box. "I've always wondered whether someone would put Ant and Dec back in their box," the King joked. He thanked staff and supporters, saying he hoped the trust would continue "as long as possible."
