A U.S. district judge ordered the release Wednesday of an apparent suicide note written by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The New York Times requested the document's disclosure. Investigators found the note in Epstein's jail cell after his death in 2019, the Times reported.

Prosecutors submitted the note to the court in May 2021 during the criminal murder case against Nicholas Tartaglione, Epstein's former cellmate. Tartaglione has said Epstein wrote it following a failed suicide attempt less than a month before he died.

CBS News has not independently verified the note.

The handwritten message reads: "They investigated me for month — found nothing!!! So 15 year old charges resulted."

It also contains the phrases "time to say goodbye" and "No fun — not worth it!!"

CBS News reported previously that on July 23, 2019 — 18 days before his death — Epstein claimed Tartaglione attacked him in their shared cell. Former Attorney General Bill Barr later testified to the House Oversight Committee that the incident appeared to be an attempted suicide.

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of soliciting prostitution. The plea led to the dismissal of a federal case against him. He served 13 months in county jail and registered as a sex offender.

A New York federal grand jury indicted Epstein on child sex trafficking charges in July 2019. On August 10, 2019, guards found him dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York. Authorities ruled the death a suicide.
