JetBlue is offering discounted fares and expanding service to help travelers hit by Spirit Airlines' weekend shutdown.

The carrier's abrupt halt stranded thousands of passengers and forced them to rebook flights. JetBlue announced $99 one-way rescue fares for Spirit customers who show proof of a valid itinerary on the same route. These fares apply through May 6.

JetBlue will also limit certain nonstop fares to $299 on routes previously flown by Spirit from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan. The goal is to avoid last-minute price surges.

"This is really tough news for the thousands of Spirit team members affected, as well as the customers who were planning trips on Spirit," JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty said in a statement. "We want to help fill the void created by this loss."

JetBlue operates extensively from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan. It plans to add service to 11 destinations and boost flights on current routes. New cities include Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Barranquilla and Cali, Colombia.

The airline is returning to Charlotte Douglas International Airport for the first time since 2024 after exiting due to weak demand.

JetBlue's Fort Lauderdale schedule will reach nearly 130 daily departures this summer, its biggest yet at the airport.

"South Florida is a key market for JetBlue, and we recognize this is a challenging moment for many travelers," Geraghty said. "Our focus is on stepping up in the near term by adding service, maintaining connectivity and keeping fares competitive, so customers can continue to travel with confidence."

JetBlue said it will adjust capacity according to demand. It is also aiding Spirit staff by extending travel privileges for pilots and flight attendants heading home and offering interviews for open positions.

Travel experts warn Spirit's shutdown could raise airfares nationwide. New York-based expert Lee Abbamonte said Spirit kept prices competitive in many markets. "Without Spirit, there's no reason for airfare to ever come down," he told Fox News Digital. He said the change could mean fewer choices and higher prices for budget travelers.
