Hiker Records Grizzly Bear and Wolf Fighting Over Carcass on California Trail
A hiker stumbled upon a grizzly bear and a wolf fighting over a dead animal on a popular California trail.
The video, shared on Facebook by Julie Argyle of Wild Love Images, has gained widespread attention. It shows a massive grizzly bear sparring with a wolf over the remains of a carcass in a river. The bear showed no patience for the wolf trying to take a share of the meal.
Size proved decisive in the clash, much as it does among top predators. Wolves rank high in North America's natural order, with few animals challenging them, particularly in packs. But a grizzly bear stands apart. A large male can weigh more than 800 pounds.
Facing such a beast up close would test anyone's nerve.
