A rescue call on the Mount Wilson Trail in Southern California turned deadly Saturday afternoon when a hiker fell into a steep ravine and was found dead.

Rescuers responded around 1:51 p.m. after reports of a fall below the trail near a challenging fixed rope section, according to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team. Climbers use anchored lines to navigate the steep terrain there.

Search and rescue crews and medics from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Air 5 helicopter located the man about 30 feet below the trail in a rocky ravine. First responders tried lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not released the victim’s identity or details on whether a medical emergency contributed to the fall.

The Mount Wilson Trail, with its narrow paths and exposed drop-offs, was temporarily closed as crews recovered the body later that evening.

Multiple agencies assisted, including the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, Sierra Madre Police and Fire departments, Arcadia and Pasadena fire crews, and Los Angeles County Fire.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department urged caution on the trail, especially in technical sections that demand careful footing and proper equipment, the Los Angeles Times reported. The investigation continues.
