Former MMA fighter dies rescuing four girls from Lake Issyk-Kul current
A former mixed martial artist died after rescuing four girls from a strong current in Kyrgyzstan's Lake Issyk-Kul.
Medet Zheenaliev, 30, spotted the girls swimming in the lake on Tuesday. One was pulled under by the current. Zheenaliev and a friend entered the water to help, but Zheenaliev never resurfaced.
Divers recovered his body the next day.
The lake is the ninth-deepest in the world, reaching 2,192 feet.
Zheenaliev had four professional fights, finishing with two wins and two losses. He won his debut by armbar submission against Vladimir Kravchuk on Sept. 23, 2017, in Moscow. Six months later he knocked out Shamil Temirkhanov in the first round at Battle on Volga 3. He lost his final two bouts, submitting to a rear-naked choke against Akhmadkhan Bokov in April 2018 and having the fight stopped after one round against Makkasharip Zaynukov in 2019.
