Fan climbs fence in flip-flops to reach Sheldon Creed during NASCAR red flag
NASCAR ran its O'Reilly Auto Parts Series race on Saturday at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. The event marked the series' first race on a military installation.
The race produced several incidents. On a restart, Sam Mayer hit the wall hard enough to bring out a red flag so crews could clear debris and check barriers.
While drivers waited on the track, Sheldon Creed, driver of the No. 00 Haas Factory Team car, received an unexpected visitor. A spectator climbed one or more fences, reached Creed's car, spoke with him briefly, then climbed back over the fences and disappeared into the crowd. The man wore flip-flops throughout.
Creed told his team on the radio that he believed the man was "wasted." Track officials later escorted the spectator away.
The incident recalled a similar breach at Watkins Glen in 2007, when a fan climbed onto the track during a red flag to obtain an autograph from Matt Kenseth.
