Explosion Rocks Chalmette Refinery Near New Orleans
Emergency crews rushed to a refinery in Chalmette, Louisiana, after a large explosion shook the community.
Video footage captured a massive plume of smoke rising from Chalmette Refining, a facility that produces about 189,000 barrels of crude oil each day. It remains unclear whether the blast caused any injuries or deaths.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed a fire at the refinery. Officials reported several road closures in the area as emergency responders worked the scene.
"Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes until further notice," the agency stated in a Facebook post. "Please use caution and allow first responders space to safely perform their duties."
Chalmette Refining did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
Chalmette sits about five miles east of downtown New Orleans, along the Mississippi River.
