Declassified Apollo Files Detail Astronaut UFO Sightings, Challenge Moon Hoax Theories
Newly declassified government files on UFO sightings during NASA's Apollo missions challenge conspiracy theories that the Moon landings were staged.
The theories claim NASA faked the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 20, 1969, and later missions to win the Space Race. Proponents often allege the events were filmed in a studio. The files provide additional context and previously unpublished material, including astronaut transcripts and archival imagery.
Astronauts described flashes of light, drifting particles and distant objects while traveling to and from the Moon.
In Apollo 17 transcripts, crew members reported very bright particles or fragments near the spacecraft. They discussed possible explanations, such as ice, paint or components from the Saturn V rocket. The observations appeared alongside routine communications with Mission Control, including navigation updates, system checks and maneuver planning.
Apollo 12 transcripts contain similar accounts. Astronauts described particles of light and later discussed the possibility that debris was illuminated by onboard equipment.
In another Apollo 17 exchange, an astronaut reported a brief flash on the lunar surface near Grimaldi crater. Mission Control asked the crew to identify the location on a map.
Officials said the descriptions reflect observations made at the time and do not include conclusions about the phenomena.
The documents are part of a federal effort to release records on unidentified anomalous phenomena. Additional materials are expected on a rolling basis.
President Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday that based on tremendous interest, he will direct the Secretary of War and other departments to release government files on alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena and UFOs. "God bless America!"
