China is developing AI-enabled robotic 'wolf packs' to scout, supply and support combat alongside troops in future wars, including a possible Taiwan invasion, according to a Foundation for Defense of Democracies report.

The analysis says Beijing is changing warfare by blending artificial intelligence, robotics and autonomous systems into frontline operations. Quadruped robots, called 'robotic wolves' in Chinese media, form the core as the People's Liberation Army tests them for 'intelligentized warfare.'

China has shown off robotic dogs before, but the report says the PLA now integrates them into large battlefield units for high-risk situations like a Taiwan invasion's early stages.

Such networked, expendable machines let commanders keep attacks going with fewer risks to soldiers, cutting political and military costs for Beijing. 'China is not just modernizing its military,' the report states. 'It is reimagining how future wars will be fought.'

The U.S. military also builds robotic systems, but China's commercial tech sector may help it scale faster. In tests, the robots scout ahead, map terrain, spot threats and haul supplies over rough ground like stairs and rubble. They work in groups to boost a unit's range, even in cities.

Some Chinese accounts show armed versions fighting with troops and drones in drills, though these lack independent checks. Taiwan conflict seems the top use case.

An amphibious assault there would mean dense cities, fought-over coasts and jammed signals, where robots could clear paths, take hits and keep advances moving as forces go inland.

Limits persist. The systems need comms and batteries, so jamming, hacks or supply issues hurt them. Small arms, smoke or debris can blind sensors. Humans still decide on kills, curbing full autonomy.
