British Army Paratroopers Jump to Tristan da Cunha to Aid Man with Suspected Hantavirus
British Army members parachuted onto Tristan da Cunha, Britain's most remote inhabited overseas territory in the Atlantic, to assist a British national with suspected hantavirus.
Two paratroopers from the Pathfinders Platoon at Colchester Garrison jumped in tandem with an intensive care nurse and a specialist doctor. They also delivered medical supplies to the island.
The patient, a resident of the island, left the cruise ship MV Hondius in mid-April. The ship had been struck by a deadly outbreak of the virus.
Captain George Lacey, who took part in the jump, described high winds that turned the mission into a particularly tricky one.
He said the team planned to stay on the island for a few days awaiting recovery. You can't parachute back off the island, he added.
